1400 Primer

JAXSAN 1400 Primer is a water thinnable acrylic latex based primer that is used as a sealer and an adhesion promoter. Due to the new polymer technology, it has excellent surface penetration into the substrate and dries quickly to a translucent finish.

Chief uses for JAXSAN 1400 are to seal cementitious materials for top coating and to promote adhesion over chalky surfaces. It may also be used over dry wall, masonry, aged asphaltic materials, wood and aged chalky coatings. Most coatings show excellent adhesion to JAXSAN 1400 although aggressive solvents may induce a softening or wrinkling of the film.

Apply JAXSAN 1400 at a rate of about 400 square feet per gallon to achieve a dry film thickness of 1.2 mils. Due to a wide variety of substrates, profile variations and absorption rates of different materials, it is good to remember that a thin film is all that is necessary to achieve good bonding.

Black Foam Primer

JAXSAN Black Foam Primer is a water thinnable primer that can be used on or under sprayed polyurethane foam. It is ready to use from the container without thinning. It is an ideal option to economically raise the temperature of the deck or foam surface when the surface of the foam is sunburned or harboring moisture.

The black color of the primer concentrates heat radiated by the sun, drying wet or damp foam given good weather conditions. The BFP dries by evaporation of water. When using as a deck primer, be sure the primer has completely dried before applying polyurethane foam.

The curing time frame will vary with substrate, temperature, humidity and sunlight. High humidity and low temperatures will slow down curing times. One should allow 3 hours of strong sun as a minimum cure time. If temperatures are below 70° F and if the relative humidity is greater than 60%, it will increase the duration. It is important to inspect the primer before applying foam to assure the primer is properly cured.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Spray apply primer to the surface in a thin pass.

  • A 1 mil thickness is usually adequate when trying to raise the surface temperature on a smooth surface.

  • Heavily scarred or profiled surfaces may require more primer.

  • If a surface is suspected of containing moisture, use only enough primer to cover the surface very lightly and not seal the surface.

  • Sealing the surface may cause blisters or delamination in the film. If blisters occur, remove primer and reapply a thinner film.

  • If blisters return, replace foam substrate.
